I'm not dead, no really

Sorry for the week without updates. I've been really sick the last 2 weeks and have had zero energy.

I was saddened to hear that one of my beloved childhood movies The Neverending Story is being remade. Hollywood remakes are usually quite bad and I suspect this one will be no exception.

Here are some early concept pics:

Gotta Catch Em All

Recently on Heroes, the government has begun hunting those with super powers.

The above pics shows those wanted by the government.

If you look closely you can spot some celebrity pics put in the scene as a joke.

There's John Locke.

And the blue haired drummer for Gorillaz.

And there's... no it can't be...

Review at 11: Coraline

When is a kid's movie not a kid's movie?

For years animation has been regarded as being for children only. Well at least in the United States its seen this way. Other cultures like Japan have long embraced animation as being for adults as well as children.

Coraline falls in this camp. The movie is mesmerizing and fascinating while being quite creepy. The visuals, all in 3D, never fail to draw you in. I often had to remind myself that I was watching stop motion animation and not CGI. It's really quite wonderful.

Coraline tells the story of a young girl who's family has recently moved. She hates her new home. Often ignored by her parents, she spends the days exploring and dealing with the strange tenants. She soon discovers a tiny door. She later finds the door only opens at night. The door leads to a wonderful place, a perfect place.

This perfect place is a mirror universe where her every dream comes true. Here her parents or Other Parents as they are known, give her full attention. The Other Parents make sure her every need is met. And the Tenants are wonderful as well. Here the Tenants are not weird but amazing characters who put on entertaining shows like a daring trapeze act or a mouse circus. So perfect... if it wasn't for those button eyes.

Everyone in the other universe has these creepy buttons for eyes. Something is definitely amiss and Coraline soon finds that things are not as perfect as they appear. Her perfect Paradise soon becomes a nightmarish Hell. Can she escape?

Like I said earlier, not really a film for children.

The voice cast includes Dakota Fanning, Keith David, Teri Hatcher, Dawn French, and Jennifer Saunders. Teri Hatcher gives what might be the best of her career playing the apathetic mother and the loving yet creepy Other Mother. Keith David also steals the show playing a stray black cat.

Coraline is a fine, fine movie. Maybe the best animated movie we'll see this year. The only two animated films that might pose some competition are Up and 9. We'll just wait and see.

Remember, be careful what you wish for...

Spoiled TV

You know, when LOST ends there really won't be any point in watching TV anymore. No other show out there even comes close to the levels of complexity that LOST brings week in and week out. The show really makes you think. It has really spoiled us.

Why aren't you reading Spiderman/Human Torch: I'm with Stupid?

Spiderman/Human Torch: I'm with Stupid is a comic book mini series that deals with the heroe's relationship through the years. We get to see Spidey and Torch interact in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's (sorta), and even today. See how the two went from rivals to friends and eventually family. Its a great story that most people missed out on.

Some of the best moments are watching Johnny Storm clash with Peter Parker and not realize that he's Spiderman. I failed to mention how funny the story can be. The Spider-mobile, Torch's self centeredness, and even hostess fruit snacks all get a mention.

Lots of fun, check it out.

Fun Fact of the Day 02/04/2009

Nintendo naming conventions are often quite silly.

Olimar and Louie's names in Pikmin are clearly based on Mario and Luigi.

Pokemon names are odd too. Ekans spelled backwards is snake. Arbok is Kobra.

If you mix up the letters in Lucas from Mother 3, you get his twin brother Claus.

Donkey Kong was not named after King Kong. Miyamoto thought the name meant stupid monkey.

Mario was named after Nintendo's Seattle landlord.

The word Nintendo means to literally make money. If you sound it out you get someone counting cash. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, NINE, TEN DOUGH.

Stuff

Well things are off and running again. I'm trying to update this site with at least something new every weekday. This week we are introducing the new caption me feature. Also a new poll question.

Unfortunately Brother's Gotta Blog is not being updated weekly as I had hoped. Right now it seems to be on a biweekly schedule. I'm hoping to get internet at home which should speed up the process.

Oh and as for my goal to launch a new project every month, I trying twice as hard this month. That's right, 2 goals this month. A short story and a flash animated video. More details soon...

OBAMA TAKES COMIC BOOK WORLD BY STORM!

WARNING: The following posts contains spoilers for Final Crisis and Dark Reign.

Today's post is brought to you by Kool-aid.

I try to keep this blog political free, but I can't help it. I'm excited to report that Amazing Spiderman #583 has gotten a 5th reprinting. This is the issue where Spiderman meets Obama in a 5 page backup story! Rock on! 5 Pages! So Awesome! I have to buy it because Obama is in it!

Also out the same week was Final Crisis # 6 where Batman dies... but who cares Obama is in Amazing Spiderman. Wait I'm getting breaking news... Obama is also appearing in this month's Savage Dragon. I've got to buy that one too!

*sips koolaid*

Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada says "Marvel isn't playing favorites. We heard Obama was a comic book fan so we put him in the book"

Other notable past Presidental comic book appearances:

Cable and Deadpool: Cable and Deadpool surf through news stories and one of the stories going by it says "Bush is a Moron". Sweet.

Ultimate X-men: Magneto takes out the White House and strips President Bush naked on the lawn and makes him bow to him. Awesome!

Nightcrawler (Nightcrawler had a comic book?) A group of rich white people conjure up a demon. President Bush and Cheney are in the crowd... because they are evil!

Can I have another koolaid? Thanks.

More Breaking news: Obama is appearing in Youngblood! Must Buy!

Oh and looky here, Obama also appears in Thunderbolts. For those who don't know at the end of Dark Reign, Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) was placed in charge of Hammer (the replacement for Shield). Obama appears in Thunderbolts to condemn Osborn. Obama would never appoint someone like Osborn to such a lofty position. Osborn must have been appointed by that no good, evil, devil worshipping (see above) Bush before he left office. If my comic book says it, then it must be true!

*Drowns self in koolaid*

OBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMA!

*HAS KOOLAID INDUCED STROKE*
